Maria Fernandez - Stuart

altIt is with great sadness that Institute of Chartered Accountants of Belize announce to membership the loss of Maria Fernandez-Stuart CFE, CrFA, FCPA, CPA, practicing member and former council member to the Institute.   Mrs. Fernandez-Stuart passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2010 as a result of injuries sustained in a senseless attack at her home in Belize City that also claimed the life of her husband, Richard Stuart.

Mrs. Fernandez- Stuart has been a member of the Institute since 1996 and has served on Council from April 2005 to April 2009.   She served three years as Treasurer and provided invaluable service to Council and membership.  In March 2009, Mrs. Fernandez-Stuart organized and presented one of the Institute’s successful seminars titled “Fraud and Corrupt Practices” for membership and the business community.

Mrs. Fernandez-Stuart had over 15 years experience in audit and accounting field.  She was a Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Forensic Accountant, Forensic Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Public Accountant.   She was a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, member of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute, Member of the Forensic Certified Public Accountants Society, Member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Houston Chapter- Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. 

"To us, the passing of Mrs. Fernandez-Stuart means that we have lost that which supports our spirit of growing and educating the profession.  But we will continue our efforts to ensure that the philosophy that Mrs. Fernandez-Stuart left with us always remains alive within our profession” commented by President, Claude Burrell, who has served on Council alongside Mrs. Fernandez-Stuart.

An official mass of thanksgiving will be held at St. John’s Cathedral at 10am on October 23, 2010.  A procession will escort the bodies of Richard and Maria Stuart from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to St. John’s Cathedral.

 The Bar Association and the Institute  has organized to walk in this procession from the Court House on Regent St to the church which will commence at 8:30 am. 

The Institute takes this opportunity to condemn the current  crime situation currently impacting the  country of Belize and will lend i ts support whereever we can in the community for a better Belize.
