The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Belize was established by an Act of the House of Representatives and the Senate of Belize in November 1984.

The objects of the Institute are:

  • To promote, foster and maintain the highest standards of accounting in public practice and in commercial and industrial spheres;
  • Safeguard and enhance the professional standing, interest and reputation of its members;
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional etiquette and ethics among its members and encourage the observance of such standards amongst non-members;
  • Express views to the Government, public authorities, commissions of inquiry and similar bodies regarding matters affecting its members and the profession;
  • Provide opportunities for discussion and exchange of views amongst its members;
  • Encourage and assist in providing increased facilities for the study of accountancy and related subjects and cooperate with bodies that are in pursuit of these objects The affairs of the Institute are managed by a Council of six persons who are elected by the membership.

The activities of the Institute are carried out by a Secretariat and a number of committees.

These Committees are:

  • Administration
  • Continuing Professional Education and Members Services
  • Education and Training
  • Publicity

In addition, there are standing Committees on:

  • Investigations
  • Discipline
  • Appeals
  • Ethics

The Institute is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean and are also affiliated with other bodies.

Standards and Code adopted by the Institute are the International Federation of Accountants' International Accounting Standards, International Standards on Auditing and its Code of Ethics.
